The fun of riding motorbike
Motorbike holds a special place among all the modes of transport that the humans have invented. From a simple bicycle to a jet to a cruise, each has its own fun. Motorbikes may not have the comforts of a car. But then the car doesn’t have the openness feeling and the thrills of a motorbike. Rolls Royce may be symbol of luxury but it lacks what a Harley Davidson or a BMW motorbike possesses. Hence, if you are toying with an idea of owning a motorbike, then welcome to the fascinating and thrilling of these 2 wheel monsters. And what better to ride but a BMW motorbike.
BMW and motorbikes
The first question to ask oneself while buying a motorbike is: “Do I have any prior experience in riding any bike?” If the answer is yes, then honestly ask yourself how much can you spend and how much will you use the bought bike? If you have a good budget and plan to use your bike extensively, then BMW bikes would be a right choice for you. If you don’t have prior riding experience or are little low on budget and/or usage, you can still go for a BMW bike. But the ideal bike for you would be a used BMW bike. Yes, a used BMW machine would not only give you that great riding experience but also save you handsome money. And a BMW bike, even though used, would still be better in performance with comparable Japanese or any other European bike. Of course, like cars, a BMW bike would be costlier then a comparable Japanese bike.
Which BMW bike to buy?
BMW has a wide variety of bikes to choose from. The BMW bikes can be classified in 3 series; R, K and F. The R series has 2 cylinders, the K series has 3 or 4 cylinders (depending upon the specific model) and F has only 1 cylinder. So if you want a bike with medium power, then R series BMWs can be a good candidate. Again in R series you have to choose from carbureted engines or fuel injected engines. The carbureted is an older technology but doesn’t require much maintenance. The latter is latest and has more power but also more maintenance. But if you want a BMW with least maintenance, then go for a K model.
If you think you are relatively inexperience in riding bikes, then go for the cheaper versions in R and K series. For instance, a R1100RT though very stylish is comparatively difficult to ride. And even the smallest hit can cause it extensive damage. Similarly, a fuel injection engine is very complex and can’t be fixed by any ordinary mechanic. Hence, any repairs on such an engine would require help from a relatively more expensive mechanic. Most modern BMW bikes have adjustable motorbike seats. Hence, seat height and position should not be problem. But its wise to sit on the bike and if possible also test ride the same to assess the comfort of riding it. If the seat is not comfortable, try adjusting it. Older BMW bike models would require some help from a mechanic for seat adjustment.
Where to buy a used BMW bike?
There are various sources to scout for a used BMW motorbike. The local newspaper is the best place to start with. Many newspapers carry classifieds exclusively for automobiles once a week. Internet is another common source to search for a used BMW bike. There are many clubs or associations which are linked to motorcycles. There are also clubs exclusively for BMW bikes. Even there are clubs for vintage BMWs. They may also publish regular newsletter which may carry used BMWs on sale advertisement. The brick and mortar dealer shops are also very good sources to buy used BMW bikes. Spring and summer are usually good time to search for a used BMW on sale.
Usual checks before you buy
Inspection of the bike, irrespective of the claims made by the seller, is very critical. Look for scratches and dents on the bike. Look if any part has rusted or has cracks. If you see a fresh paint in certain part of bike, chances are that the seller is trying to hide a repair welding or some other flaw. Ask for service and repair records. Do test ride the BMW if the inspection is okay.
Owning a BMW bike is a cherished dream of most of the people who like two wheelers. A used BMW motorbike can help you fulfill this dream without causing a hole in your pocket.
